The ruins of the Church of São Bento, in Maragogi, date back to the first half of the 17th century and hold mysteries about their origin. The oldest record is from 1643, on a map by the German geographer George Marcgraf, who already mentioned a church dedicated to Saint Benedict in the region.
There is no consensus on its original function: some believe it was a monastery or even a hospice, used as a stopping point for religious people traveling between Olinda and Porto Calvo.
Today, the ruins remain an important historical heritage site, blending faith, memory, and mystery, and are a tourist attraction that enchants those seeking to learn more about Maragogi's past. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the Alagoas coast and one of Maragogi's great postcards, enchanting visitors with its crystal-clear turquoise waters, fine white sand, and a setting surrounded by coconut trees that form a paradisiacal tropical landscape.
